Personal Safety

Handy Van Scheme

The Handy Van Scheme was launched in January 2004 and aims to assist people over the age of 60 with household repairs and minor installations. The team of two are able to help with a variety of practical tasks including unblocking gutters, putting up curtain rails, fitting stair gates, replacing tap washers and draft proofing. Both workers have been trained to deal with safety measures in the home as well as crime prevention and fire prevention. The crew carry a good range of equipment and, if necessary, can increase household security with door chains, window locks, spy holes and entry phones with speakers. Residents are charged minimal prices and can rest assured knowing the work is done by reputable workers. The service is jointly funded by Horsham District Community Safety Partnership, Saxon Weald and Horsham District Council with additional sponsorship from Sussex Police Authority, West Sussex County Council, Age Concern and the Home Office Building Safer Communities Fund. Anyone in the 60 plus age group can request the service by telephoning 01403 226005.

Cold Calling

Most people who call at your home will be genuine. But sometimes, people turn up unannounced with the intention of tricking their way into your home to steal your valuables and money.
