About the service
Throughout the district, we have NHS advisers available to offer help for smokers. These are trained specialists who are happy to see any smokers wanting to quit, on a regular, ongoing basis. The service is free and highly professional. Smokers can ‘self-refer’ and do not need to visit their GP or be referred by any other Health Care professional.
How the Stop Smoking Service can help you
You can get information and advice from us. The phone number has an answer phone. You can request help from an adviser at your own surgery, and some pharmacies have especially trained advisers. If you are ready to quit, we can offer you are choice of classes and clinics at various venues and at varying times, including evenings and Saturday mornings. Classes commence every four to six weeks, or you can speak to an adviser or see them, usually within a few weeks.
Quitting with others in a class is sometimes more effective than doing it alone. Seeing an adviser, whether one to one or with the class, on an ongoing basis, is of particular benefit. We can help you by addressing your concerns, helping you to manage any withdrawal symptoms, helping you to plan your day-to-day schedule now no longer controlled by cigarettes, and helping you to get through feelings you may have, like fears of being unable to be successful in your quit attempt, or fear of relapsing back to smoking. Quitting smoking can be for some people like losing your best friend. Other smokers relish the freedom that comes when your life no longer involves worrying about when you can have your next cigarette.
We can offer Nicotine Replacement Therapy, (patches, gum etc) or discuss Zyban (tablets taken daily to reduce the urge to smoke) if you feel you need help with withdrawal symptoms. You do not pay for the cost of the prescription, only the government prescription charge, if this applies to you.
A programme has been produced by West Sussex Care Trust which provides information about Stop Smoking Classes. New classes start in September 2008, for further information please call 01903 708000.
