Disability Equality Scheme

Disability Equality

This page refers to our Horsham District Council’s Disability Equality Scheme (which has now been superseded by the Single Equality Scheme). The Disability Equality Scheme was developed in response to the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act 2005 and to promote the concept of Social Inclusion.

The Disability Equality Scheme gave the Council and all those who provide services on behalf of the Council, guidelines for their practices and procedures to ensure that people with disabilities are not discriminated against. It also provides an Action Plan together with a programme of improvements to the Council’s buildings and service plans to ensure that everyone has access to the services it provides.

The Scheme was a working document and the aim is to ensure that it encompasses changes in legislation, design standards and innovative solutions to achieve social inclusion. (The Scheme has now been merged into the Single Equality Scheme which takes into consideration the requirements of the Equality Act 2010)

Consultation took place throughout Spring 2007 and the Scheme was approved and accepted by the Council's Cabinet and senior staff in July 2007. The Council  produced the Scheme in partnership with disabled people and related groups.
