Work of the Standards Committee

The main role of the standards committee is to promote and maintain high standards of conduct throughout the authority.

All Councillors are required to adhere to a Code of Conduct (Part 5A of the Constitution) and, in accordance with the requirements of the Local Government Act 2000, the District Council has a Standards Committee to oversee the conduct of District and Parish Councillors.

The functions of the Committee are to:-

  • Provide the Council with advice on adopting a Local Code of Conduct.
  • Help Members to follow the Code.
  • Provide or make provision for Member training on the Code.
  • Monitor the effectiveness of the Code.
  • Promote and maintain high standards of conduct for Members.
  • Granting dispensations to Councillors and co-opted members from requirements relating to interests set out in the Code of Conduct.
  • Deal with local assessment of complaints against members

The Standards Committee comprises both elected District and Parish Councillors, together with Independent Members. The Independent Members are all residents of the District having no other connection with the Council.  A list of Standards Committee members can be found using the link on this page.
