Improved recycling and rubbish collection service

Acorn Plus is the new and improved recycling scheme being rolled out across the district.  The new scheme started in July 2009 and the rollout should be completed by summer 2010.

It builds on the success of the original Acorn scheme and will push the current recycling rate of 38% towards 60%, further decreasing the amount of rubbish sent to landfill.

This enhanced scheme will be delivered at no extra cost to the tax payer and by using innovative vehicles for collection we will be able to reduce our overall carbon footprint.

There will be some changes in householders’ days and times for collection and also where bins need to placed, but these will all be communicated to the householder and supported by a new implementation team. In addition, the roll-out of the service is phased over an 18 month period to ensure that all issues can be accommodated when ever possible.

The key advantages of Acorn Plus are:

  • More materials will be collected at the kerbside, including corrugated cardboard and glass.
  • The increases in recycling will reduce the amount of rubbish sent to landfill.
  • Householders rubbish will still be collected on a weekly basis.
  • All the improvements to the service will be delivered at no extra cost to the tax payer.
  • The new vehicles will mean that there are less transport movements on our roads and therefore less CO2 emissions.
  • The new wheeled bin for mixed dry recycling will be much more convenient for the householder as less sorting is required.
  • The closed bin means less litter blowing around the streets of the District.
  • The new vehicles are much smaller and quieter than the traditional refuse collection vehicles.
  • Garden waste and card will still be collected free of charge
  • By working in partnership the local authorities of West Sussex have entered in to long-term and secure markets for all the recyclables collected.
  • As one bin will be used for the recycling collections it will be easier when possible in the future for new materials to be added to the list.
