HAZARDOUS WASTE

New regulations surrounding hazardous waste came into effect from July 2005.  Everyday items such as fluorescent tubes, computer monitors and old TV's are now classed as hazardous items.  Their potential for damaging human health as well as the environment is such that they need to be disposed of correctly.

All Household Waste Recycling Sites (HWRS) in West Sussex have separate storage facilities for hazardous waste.  For example:

  • Halon fire extinguishers
  • Household products used in cleaning (solvents), gardening, DIY (thinners, paints) and car maintenance (engine oil)
  • Pesticides
  • Fluorescent tubes
  • Electrical appliances (TV's, computers)

Hazardous wastes are kept in secure conditions before being taken away for specialist disposal and recycling where appropriate.

IMPORTANT: Before taking any hazardous waste to HWRS for disposal please contact West Sussex County Council Waste Management Services on (01243) 777595.

Asbestos

Many different types of asbestos exist.  The only type accepted at HWRS is CEMENT BONDED ASBESTOS (as found in garage roofing slabs, down pipes etc).

For other types of asbestos e.g. FIBROUS ASBESTOS (pipe and boiler lagging, insulation boards etc) please contact the Health and Safety Executive on (01342) 334200.  They hold a list of approved companies which remove asbestos.

Disposal Instructions for Cement Bonded Asbestos

For health and safety reasons the material must be double wrapped or double bagged in TRANSPARENT 1000 guage polythene and sealed with tape.  Bags and sheeting can be purchased from builder's merchants or DIY stores.  A maximum of 200 kg will be accepted at any of the following HWRS:

  • Burgess Hill    (01444) 243041
  • Chichester      (01243) 787300
  • Crawley          (01293) 545861
  • Sompting        (01903) 752318
