CHEWING GUM

logo for chewing gum binning campaign

NOT BINNING chewing gum costs tax payers in the Horsham District thousands of pounds a year to clean up. The Council ran a campaign in the summer of 2006 to raise awareness if the issue and continues to tackle it with 'deep cleaning' and by dealing with those individuals that cause the problem.

Chewing gum is classed as litter and as such those caught dropping gum can be served with a fixed penalty notice of £75 (default level).

As part of the summer 2006 campaign, hundreds of 'Wrap-its' and 'GumParks' were handed out free with the message 'thanks for binning your gum when your done'. Some stocks of these were held back and samples are still available to gum chewers and gum retailers.
