The Council receives around 2,500 planning applications a year, or eight a day and 27,000 letters about them. It also gets 600 complaints about breaches of planning regulations (by builders) and 30 planning enforcement cases.  The Council sends out around 19,000 letters a year to neighbours to inform them of planning applications.

The district has more than 1,800 Listed Buildings protected by the Council and 37 urban Conservation Areas, where development is restricted. 

The maximum penalty for those who breach one of the Council's Planning Enforcement Notices, is a fine of £20,000.

You need permission from Building Control to construct a conservatory, carport, porch or covered yard with an area of more than 30sq.m.
