Health & Safety

The Public Health and Licensing Department carries out enforcement duties under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 in a range of commercial premises including:-

  • retailing
  • some warehouses
  • most offices
  • hotels
  • catering
  • sports
  • leisure
  • consumer services
  • places of worship

      We also:-

  • provide advice, education and training for owners of businesses and their staff and people setting up in business for the first time
  • register premises where people work in offices, shops, warehouses etc..
  • investigate accidents at work.
  • investigate complaints about working conditions
  • strive to ensure a consistent and fair approach in accordance with the Councils Enforcement Policy.
  • provide a range of useful information leaflets
  • liaise regularly with the Health and Safety Executive who are responsible for other businesses such as factories, building sites, schools, etc.
