HOUSING - PUBLIC HEALTH AND LICENSING

Our aim is to ensure that people have a home which is safe, healthy, in good repair and with adequate amenities to suit their needs.  We provide advice, support and where appropriate, take enforcement action in a variety of areas, and are responsible for overseeing and implementing the following;

Complaints:
We investigate into issued raised concerning the housing conditions from tenants in the private rented sector and can take follow up action with the landlord in appropriate cases

Houses in Multiple Occupation:
We carry out inspections of converted flats, bedsits and shared houses to ensure that the landlord is operating the premises to satisfactory standards for amenities, repair, fire safety and general management standards

Private Sector Housing Assistance Policy:
We offer discretionary financial assistance in certain circumstances for repair and improvement works

Disabled Facilities Grant Scheme: We provide grants for a range of adaptations, which may be necessary to help a disabled person live more independently in his or her home

Caravan Sites:
We license and inspect both Park Homes (residential sites) and holiday home/touring caravan sites

Filthy or Verminous:
We provide advice, support and where appropriate, take enforcement action in respect of properties considered to be in a filthy or verminous condition, to clean the properties so that they pose no risk to health

Energy Efficiency:
We assist with the implementation of the Council’s Energy Efficiency and Fuel Poverty Action Plan

Empty Properties:
We encourage owners of long-term vacant dwellings to bring them back into use and actively apply the Councils Empty Property Strategy

Housing Assessments:
We undertake housing assessments for immigration and social housing allocations

Advice:
We work with Housing Services and give advice to tenants, owner-occupiers and landlords on a wide range of housing related topics and home maintenance.
