DEVELOPMENT MANAGEMENT
What is Development Management?
Development Management makes sure that changes to buildings and land and their uses are right for the site concerned, and that the wrong things do not get built. The Council aims to make the best decision in each case although this might not always be the quickest. We need to consider the effect a proposal might have on the environment, neighbours and the local community. Some applications raise complicated issues, involve specialist areas like minerals and waste disposal, or need to be specially assessed for their environmental impact. Together we ensure that development is guided and implemented throughout the District in the best possible way.
What do we do?
Strategic and Community Planning: This department formulates policies and guidelines to meet and control the future demand for land and buildings. By planning ahead it is possible not only to protect our area but also to enhance and improve the appearance of the District.
Development Management: The main role is to consider planning applications and proposals for developments in the area. Split into two teams covering the North and South of the District, this section also seeks to ensure that any planning permission granted is implemented in accordance with any conditions attached to it.
Planning Administration: This section is responsible for checking all planning applications to ensure that they are complete and then registered. Should you call at our offices or telephone us, you will be assisted in the first instance by staff in the Planning Administration section.
Compliance: In order that development is carried out as intended, this team is responsible for investigating all breaches of planning control, for pursuing enforcement action where appropriate and for monitoring compliance with approved plans.
Building Control: The primary role of the Building Control section is to ensure that minimum standards of construction are achieved to safeguard the health and safety of people in and around buildings. The section is also responsible for the control of demolitions, dangerous structures and access for the disabled.
