Acorn Plus Scheme
Improved recycling and rubbish collection service
Acorn Plus is the new and improved recycling scheme rolled out across the district between July 2009 and summer 2010.
It builds on the success of the original Acorn scheme and will push the current recycling rate of 38% towards 60%, further decreasing the amount of rubbish sent to landfill.
This enhanced scheme uses innovative vehicles for collection which reduce our overall carbon footprint.
The key advantages of Acorn Plus are:
- More materials are collected at the kerbside, including corrugated cardboard and glass.
- The increases in recycling reduce the amount of rubbish sent to landfill.
- Householders rubbish is still collected on a weekly basis.
- All the improvements to the service were delivered at no extra cost to the tax payer.
- The new vehicles will mean that there are less transport movements on our roads and therefore less CO2 emissions.
- The new wheeled bin for mixed dry recycling is much more convenient for the householder as less sorting is required.
- The closed bin means less litter blowing around the streets of the District.
- The new vehicles are much smaller and quieter than the traditional refuse collection vehicles.
- Garden waste and card are still collected free of charge
- By working in partnership the local authorities of West Sussex have entered in to long-term and secure markets for all the recyclables collected.
- As one bin is used for the recycling collections it will be easier when possible in the future for new materials to be added to the list.
