Excess Waste Policy
Any waste placed outside any of the wheeled bins will not be collected. Following strict waste reduction targets from Central Government, coupled to health and safety concerns for the operatives, refuse crews have been instructed not to accept any items for disposal which are not contained within residents’ wheeled bins.
At present all the rubbish placed in the bin goes straight to a landfill site for disposal. In West Sussex there is less than five years of landfill space left so we will soon have a real problem on our hands. The Acorn Plus Scheme has been implemented to increase recycling and reduce the amount of waste being disposed of in landfill. We must all take ownership of our waste and try to cut down on the amount that we produce.
Most households currently have a 140 litre wheeled bin for refuse, a blue topped 240 litre wheeled bin for dry recycling and a brown topped 240 litre wheeled bin for green garden waste. The overall capacity of these containers provides adequate space for the majority of households who participate fully in the recycling schemes offered at the kerbside and at community recycling points.
Households of 5 persons or less must contain their rubbish within a maximum of one 140 litre container to enable refuse collection to take place. Anyone unable to contain their residual waste in one 140 litre wheeled bin each week can contact us for advice on waste reduction which may involve a visit by a Council Officer to discuss waste minimisation.
Excess waste can be taken to any of West Sussex County Council's Household Waste Recycling Sites for disposal free of charge.
