Play Areas

There are 55 play areas managed by the District Council and many of the Parishes have their own sites. The play areas range from those specially designed for the very young, to larger areas for children of all ages (0 to 17). There is a continuous programme of improvement works to refurbish play areas, focusing on good play value and provision for all abilities (inclusive play).

Excellent progress has been made on the 5 year Play Strategy to improve the quality of children’s free outdoor play in the Horsham District (see below for further information). This includes a range of play improvements, the provision of mobile skate ramps which can be used across the District, and a new multi-sports court in Horsham Park.
Latest play improvements include the new woodland adventure play area at Beech Road Open Space, Horsham which has been designed to challenge older children in an exciting woodland environment. At Littlehaven Lane, Horsham the play area has been completely redesigned and landscaped to include exciting equipment for primary school age children along with some natural play features. In a joint project between Horsham District Council, Parish Councils and the Big Lottery more challenging play equipment has been provided at Sullington Village Hall, Broadbridge Heath Village Centre and Ashington Community Centre.
The District and Parish Council’s have been talking with more children about play. Recent consultations have taken place at North Heath Primary School and Holbrook Youth Club, .
Play improvements coming up include Meadowside in Storrington, Carpenters Meadow in Pulborough and some small improvements at Roffey Recreation Ground.
A Play Strategy and Action Plan for the Horsham District
Horsham District Council in partnership with the Parish and Neighbourhood Councils, West Sussex County Council and other key play space providers has developed a Play Strategy and Action Plan which focuses on improving children’s and young people’s play opportunities throughout the District. The Play Strategy allowed access to a Big Lottery Fund grant of £213,000 which has gone towards helping achieve these objectives.
