Opportunities and Initiatives

Aside from organising food and drink related events such as the annual 'Horsham and District Food and Drink Festival', and 'The Big Nibble' - a special day when visitors to horsham can celebrate and enjoy locally produced food and drink - Business Development also has a role in highlighting various opportunities and initiatives for food and drink-based businesses.

The free Safer Food Better Business Training for example, allows food business to comply with legislation and have a documented food management system. Safer Food, Better Business (SFBB) is an innovative and practical approach to food safety management. It has been developed to help small businesses put in place food safety management procedures and comply with food hygiene regulations.  Training courses take place in January with follow up visits to business premises to ensure that Safer Food Better Business has been implemented correctly.

Those starting up a food business will be interested in our food hygiene courses on offer from Horsham District Council, including the basic Food Hygiene Course and the more advanced Supervising Food Safety Scheme.

New for 2011 is the launch of a Food Hygiene Rating Scheme. The primary aim of the scheme will be to allow consumers to make informed choices about the places in which they choose to eat and through this, to encourage businesses to improve hygiene standards.

The Sussex Breakfast accreditation scheme is open to any Sussex accommodation or hospitality business serving breakfasts, such as B&Bs, hotels, cafes and attractions. A 'Sussex Breakfast' is at least 60% local, seasonal ingredients. There are many commercial and ethical advantages to being a Sussex Breakfast provider.

Look out for future opportunities and initiatives in this section.
