Warnham Mill Pond Reservoir

Warnham Mill Pond Reservoir Consultation

Warnham Mill Pond is classified a 'reservoir' under the Reservoirs Act 1975 and is managed by Horsham District Council in partnership with the Environment Agency.

A routine inspection of the reservoir has identified the need for work to be undertaken to meet revised safety standards.

Horsham District Council has appointed consultants, funded by Defra, to carry out an options appraisal study to identify the most suitable solution to meet these new standards.

The main exhibition shows 3 options that have emerged as realistic solutions for Warnham Mill Pond Reservoir and the Nature Reserve. The other options considered in the study can also be viewed.

Option 1C Installing additional sluice gates (190kb)

Increase the size and number of sluice gates so that flood water during the 1 in 10,000 (0.01%) year flood event passes through the new sluice gates safely. Works would also be required to enlarge the culvert (a tunnel that water passes through) under Warnham Road. Cost: £6m - £7m
Option 2A Constructing a second higher retaining embankment (286kb)

Increase the height of the retaining embankment to safely manage the water level expected during the 1 in 10,000 (0.01%) year flood event.  Works would also be required to enlarge the culvert under Warnham Road.Cost: £8m - £11m
Option 4A Removing the reservoir retaining embankment (567kb)

Declassify the reservoir by reducing the embankment level, excavating a new channel for Boldings Brook and creating small ponds and wetland habitats within a new floodplain system. Cost: £3m - £4m

Each of the options will have different impacts on the existing Nature Reserve, however we recognise that by selecting the right scheme there will be considerable opportunities to create a wider range of natural habitats over time.

Your views count about the potential solutions for Warnham Mill Pond Reservoir.  We would like to encourage local residents, stakeholders and interested parties to provide their input as to which is their preferred option. Results of this consultation exercise will be used to influence the chosen solution so that necessary works can begin as currently anticipated in late 2012.

Public consultation is being carried out over the coming weeks with an exhibition on the emerging options together with the other options from the study.
