HORSHAM DISTRICT PLAY AREAS

Pondtail Play Area

There are 53 play areas managed by the District Council and many of the Parishes have their own sites. The play areas range from those specially designed for the very young, to larger areas for children of all ages (0 to 17). There is a continuous programme of improvement works to refurbish play areas, focusing on good play value and provision for all abilities (inclusive play).

Excellent progress has been made on the 5 year Play Strategy to improve the quality of children’s free outdoor play in the Horsham District (see below for further information). This includes a range of play improvements, the provision of mobile skate ramps which can be used across the District, and a new multi-sports court in Horsham Park.

Latest play improvements include the extended play area at Jackdaw Lane (North Horsham) where, along with traditional equipment, natural play opportunities have been created. At Groombridge Way (South Horsham), the new design for younger children has included sand, rocks and mounds. Replacement equipment has been installed at the small local play area in Cook Road (North Horsham) and the Neighbourhood play area in Brookview (Coldwaltham).

The District and Parish Council’s have been talking with more children about play. Recent consultations include North Heath Primary School, Arunside Primary School, Southwater Infant School, Tanbridge House School, Rydon Community College, Steyning Grammar School and Ashington First School.

Play improvements coming up include Foster Lane (Ashington), Southwater Country Park, Broadbridge Heath Village Centre, Littlehaven Lane (North Horsham), Fenhurst Close (South Horsham) and Sullington Village Hall.

A Play Strategy and Action Plan for the Horsham District
Horsham District Council in partnership with the Parish and Neighbourhood Councils, West Sussex County Council and other key play space providers has developed a Play Strategy and Action Plan which focuses on improving children’s and young people’s play opportunities throughout the District. The Play Strategy has allowed access to a Big Lottery Fund grant of £213,000 that will go towards helping achieve these objectives.

If you wish to discuss any ideas or issues around children’s play, please contact the Parks Community Liaison Officer on 01403 215201 or email freeplayzone@horsham.gov.uk
