PLAY STRATEGY AND ACTION PLAN
Horsham District Council in partnership with the Parish and Neighbourhood Councils, West Sussex County Council and other key play space providers has developed a Play Strategy and Action Plan which focuses on improving children’s and young people’s play opportunities throughout the District.
The Action Plan is a 5 year plan, running from 2007 to 2012 and focuses on the following objectives:
Objective 1 – Improve the public realm as a child friendly environment, ensuring that all parks, thoroughfares, housing estates and other public spaces within the District are as conducive as possible to play.
Objective 2 – Promote the importance of play in relation to children and young people’s health, well-being and personal development, to all those that have an influence.
Objective 3 – Develop a joined up approach to the distribution of play resources by continuing to hold play partnership meetings.
Objective 4 – Work to reduce the barriers that prevent children from accessing and playing in the general public domain.
Objective 5 – Aim to offer all children and young people the chance to encounter acceptable risks in stimulating and challenging play environments.
Objective 6 – To allow the opportunity for children and young people to have a say in play and youth provision, therefore building community cohesions across the age groups.
The Play Strategy has resulted in a successful bid to the Big Lottery Fund for a grant of £213,000 that will go towards helping achieve these objectives. This money is being spent on six projects across the District.
