Acorn Plus - fifth phase starts soon
24 Jun 2010
PREPARATIONS for the fifth and final major phase of the Acorn Plus household recycling and refuse collection scheme have begun.
Horsham District Council has introduced the new Acorn Plus scheme across the Horsham District in phases over an 18 month period, allowing it to effectively manage individual enquiries and ensure that householders’ needs are accommodated wherever possible.
Horsham District Council has also invested in help from community volunteers and has a specialist implementation team to ensure there is additional support for all residents.
From Monday 21 June, householders in Itchingfield, Rudgwick, Slinfold, Broadbridge Heath, Colgate, Lower Beeding and Rusper have been receiving their new Acorn Plus recycling bin and information pack (containing detailed instructions, collection calendar and recycling information wheel).
Anyone who has not received a bin by 5 July is kindly asked to contact the Acorn Plus Support Team at Horsham District Council on 01403 739459.
The new scheme will enable householders to recycle more by allowing a wider range of material to be put together in one bin. New materials that can be recycled include corrugated cardboard, all types of paper, junk mail, waxed food and beverage cartons and glass bottles and jars.
Non-recyclable waste will continue to be collected weekly.
Householders have no need to worry that the material collected for recycling will go to waste as sustainable markets have already been secured through existing contractual arrangements.
Over the years, the authorities in West Sussex have worked closely with residents to provide recycling services that meet the highest quality standards to ensure materials always find an end market. This has meant that none of the recyclable materials collected have needed to be sent to landfill sites as all have been used to create new products.
It is hoped that by working together, residents and Horsham District Council will be able to push overall Horsham District household recycling levels towards 60% and significantly reduce the amount of waste disposed of to landfill.
Householders are asked to read the collection instructions that were delivered in a coloured envelope under the lid of the new bin and save these important guidelines for future reference.
Acorn Plus is an initiative from Horsham District Council.
