Celebrating 10 years of health walks in the Horsham District

11 Aug 2010

TO CELEBRATE 10 years of health walks in the Horsham District, Horsham District Council has organised a great walk around Horsham on Saturday 14 August.

The walk will follow the Riverside Walk in a clockwise direction, and will start from the Rugby Club in Hammerpond Road, where registration is at 9.30 am.

The walk is divided into four sections and has been arranged so that participants can do the whole 13 mile walk or can do one or two of the sections with lunch available to buy at the Holbrook Club and tea and cakes at the Rugby Club at the end. The shortest section is 2 miles and the longest section is 4.5 miles.

This walk is free, but if any participants wish to make a donation to the British Heart Foundation, it would be most gratefully accepted. The British Heart Foundation jointly funded the start of the national health walks scheme, so without that support, the scheme would not be here today.

Hundreds of people have already benefitted from the health walks around the Horsham District. Walking is a great form of exercise as it can be incorporated into everyday life no matter how fit or old a person is.

Regular walking has many benefits. It can prevent and manage heart disease, help maintain a healthy weight and strengthen bones. It can help to improve balance, co-ordination and flexibility and can help relieve anxiety and depression. Walking in a group can be both relaxing and sociable.

The programme of guided walks enables participants to take part in regular walks in a relaxed, friendly environment and, at the same time, explore the lovely towns, villages and countryside throughout Horsham district. There are three different levels of difficulty in the walks programme and all walks publicised are led by trained volunteers.

To register on the walk please call Jill on 01403 250511. To find out more please visit http://www.horsham.gov.uk/leisure/2103.aspx
