About the electric vehicle charging stations
THE first public electric vehicle charging stations in the Horsham District have been launched. Provided by Horsham District Council in partnership with West Sussex County Council, there are now two Elektrobay recharging stations available to the public in Storrington and two in Horsham town.
They are part of the 22 charging stations, produced by Brighton based Elektromotive, installed in 11 locations across West Sussex. The recharging stations in Storrington’s Library Car Park and Horsham’s North Street Car Park form part of an emerging national network of recharging infrastructure.
Drivers of electric vehicles will receive a smart card when they join the ‘Charge your Car’ network (www.chargeyourcar.org.uk). For the £50 annual membership, this smart card gives users access to any of the posts registered with the network across the county and beyond.
The Government is encouraging drivers to consider choosing more environmentally friendly vehicles. With no car tax to pay, electric cars offer zero tailpipe emissions and low cost refuelling. The cost of powering an electric car for 10,000 miles is around £200. In comparison, the cost of diesel for the same journey would cost over £1,500.
The establishment of a recharging network across the district will alleviate ‘range anxiety’ and give electric vehicle owners the opportunity to top up their batteries when out and about.
