Planning for future floods
9 November 2009
FOUR priorities have been identified by a working group at Horsham District Council to make plans to help reduce the risk of flooding in the Horsham District.
The Flooding and Drainage Working Group is a temporary working group set up by the Scrutiny and Overview Committee at the Council to review specific issues relating to flood risk.
The four main priorities of the working group are:
- Infrastructure in rural areas - including ditches, drains and sewers
- Rivers and main watercourses
- Emergency planning and support
- Planning implication
Horsham District residents are invited to attend and listen to the discussions the working group will be holding on the various options available in preventing floods in the area.
Meetings will take place on Wednesday 25 November at 12.30pm and Thursday 10 December at 3pm, both at Horsham District Council’s Park North building in North Street, Horsham.
Residents are also encouraged to send any comments they have on flooding to scrutiny@horsham.gov.uk.
Part of the working group’s role will be to consider the development of planning advice around drainage impact assessments and other drainage measures for all relevant new development applications.
Cllr Jonathan Chowen, Chairman of the Flooding and Drainage Working Group at Horsham District Council, said:
“Although most of the Horsham District isn’t prone to flooding, we have had some episodes of it happening, and with the threat of global change as well as increasing pressure to build more houses, the risk of flooding could worsen and we want to put in place measures to stop this.
“We have identified four areas we think are most important with regard to flooding and drainage and intend to discuss these at our meetings to make sure we can come up with the right solutions.”
