Scrappage scheme for boilers
11 January 2010
HORSHAM District Council is expecting to receive many enquiries from residents wanting to know more about the boiler scrappage scheme since it was launched by the Government recently.
The scrappage scheme, organised by the Energy Saving Trust, is set to gain a lot of attention and Horsham District Council is keen to ensure householders interested in the scheme are made aware that they contact the Energy Saving Trust (EST) on 0800 512 012 if they have any queries.
According to the Government, the scheme will help households cut their energy bills, reduce CO2 emissions and support thousands of jobs.
To address this, the Government is offering up to 125,000 households £400 towards the cost of upgrading their boiler (if G-rated or equivalent or worse) to a high efficiency A-rated one or a renewable heating technology. This will help to save in the region of 140,000tCO2 per year - equivalent to taking 45,000 cars off the road.
People who own their homes or landlords who rent homes are eligible, but social landlords, housing associations and boiler installers are not.
To qualify households need to have a working G-rated boiler. It is likely to be G-rated if it is more than 15 years old and gas fired.
A permanent pilot light is also a good indicator as to whether a gas boiler is G-rated. If the boiler is oil fired, then this is likely to be eligible if it is more than 25 years old.
Householders under 60 can only apply if the boiler is the main boiler used to heat the home and is in working order. For those aged over 60, the device does not have to work.
If the boiler does qualify the next step is to arrange a quote for a new one from a qualified installer. After this the EST needs to have details of the old boiler and the installer that’s been chosen to fit the new one.
The EST will also want confirmation the installer has actually visited the home and provided the owner with a proper quote for the work. Assuming all that is in order, a voucher worth £400 will be issued from 18 January. It is valid for 12 weeks.
The householder pays the bill in full to the installer, submits both the invoice for the work and the voucher to the EST to claim back the £400. The £400 rebate should take no more than 25 working days of the paperwork reaching the Trust.
