Promoting race equality

20th May 2004

A NEW race equality scheme has been launched at Horsham District Council.

The Council’s first such scheme has been put in place in response to the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000 to give new guidance to staff and councillors about all race equality issues.

It is designed to provide a number of benefits to the way the Council works, including better informed decision making, clearer targeting of services and policies, improved staff management and more appropriate and accessible services to the public.

Explaining the purpose of the scheme, Joan Martin, Head of Personnel Services at Horsham District Council, said:

“The Council is committed to ensuring that services and employment opportunities are available to all sections of the community and therefore welcomes the systematic framework provided by this legislation, which enables it to continue to build on existing good practice.

“This organisation has an impressive track record of providing high quality, economic and efficient services and we intend to use this opportunity to embed race equality into the priorities and working practices of the Council to ensure that all of the public are able to secure a better quality of life.”
