Eco sculpture competition
22nd June 2004
A COMPETITION is being run for local school children to see who can turn household products into works of art.
Horsham District Council is working in partnership with the Horsham District Education Business Partnership in running an ‘Eco sculpture’ competition.
All schools in the Horsham District have been invited to take part and children are being advised that their sculptures can be any shape or form but must be made from household items that can be either recycled or reused.
To help the budding sculptors, five lucky schools have had the opportunity to work with local eco-artist, Hakan Erkam.
“Art is fun; you can make the most amazing pieces from everyday objects,“ says Hakan.
“Recycling is so important; at the moment we are consuming things faster than the earth can replenish itself so it is vital to raise awareness about recycling and reusing items, and we can do this through art.”
Students from Millais, All Saints, St Leonard’s and Muntham House schools in Horsham and St. Peter’s in Cowfold are all working hard to produce their sculptures in time for judging day on Sunday 4 July at the Council’s family fun day in Horsham Park.
Voting for the public’s favourite piece will take place at the fun day where all competition entries will be exhibited. The winning schools will be awarded book tokens (from the Horsham District Education Business Partnership), a waste management kit, an environmental audit and a limited edition print from Hakan’s own collection.
Cllr Robert Nye, Cabinet Member for Environmental Services and Public Health Control at Horsham District Council, said:
“Last year we had so many positive comments from students, teachers and fun day voters and we are delighted to be able to run this competition for the second year.
“The sculpture pieces are a great way for people to stop and think about how important it is to recycle.”
Environmental art workshops for the under 16s will be run free of charge by Hakan Erkam during the afternoon of 4 July as part of the fun day in Horsham Park.
