Recreation ground improvements
20th July 2004
PLANS to improve Victory Road Recreation Ground in Horsham have come a step closer to fruition.
Subject to successful bids for funding and approval by Horsham District Council, work on the planned enhancements costing £110,000 should start at this popular recreation ground later in the year.
Amongst the most visible changes to the recreation ground would be a new children’s play area, extended footpaths, additional lighting and a youth shelter - all aimed at improving the overall site, its safety and helping to combat anti-social behaviour.
It is proposed that half the cost of £50,000 will be met by the District Council with the remaining amount coming from external funding.
Work on plans for the scheme follow ongoing work to maintain the site by an active Friends group (‘FREC’) and detailed discussions with them, site users, Trafalgar Neighbourhood Council and local councillors.
At its meeting on 15 July, Horsham District Council’s Cabinet approved that these proposals be put to the full meeting of the Council on 28 July.
At the Cabinet meeting, Cllr Alan Harris, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Cultural Services at Horsham District Council, said:
"This is an excellent scheme to improve a well used site and what is really good about it is that local people are getting actively involved.
“The friends group, ‘FREC’, is already doing a great job in helping to look after the site and by working with them we hope that external funding can be brought in from sources like 'Living Spaces' and 'Biffaward' which wouldn't be available to the District Council on its own."
