Opposites Attract!
26th July 2004
From across the world, across the country, and even from across the Museum, opposites have been 'attracted' to each other in an unusual and entertaining exhibition. Based around the idea of 'little and large', Horsham Museum has scoured their collection of 65,000 objects to bring together some extremes in size to create a visually interesting display.
On the 'little' side there are genuine objects ranging from General Tom Thumb's tailcoat, a thumb Bible, tiny boxes, a musical box, a pair of tiny scissors, miniature paintings, the world's smallest handwriting, Chinese shoes for bound feet, and objects that were made in miniature, not children’s toys, but items that were deliberately made to be small. On the 'large' side there is a large 18th century Spanish flagon, a giant light bulb from the early years of the last century, the chemise worn by Queen Victoria, shoes worn in the 1970s, as well as other large and unusual items. Occasionally opposites attract and become stuck with one another and one unusual item on display has done just that, a large, rare Victorian teapot with a miniature teapot as the knob on the lid.
Visitors to this free temporary exhibition held in the Museum's Craft and Art Gallery can admire and treat seriously the workmanship in making little and large objects, or they can just laugh at the sheer variety and fun of seeing such opposites together!
The 'Little and Large' exhibition does however prove one thing, opposites do attract and in doing so make an attractive and different exhibition.
