Britain in a beer glass at Horsham Festival
25th August, 2004
FORTY ales from the four corners of the UK, including two from Horsham, will feature at the town’s second beer festival.
The weekend long event, being run as part of Horsham District Food and Drink Festival, is the brain child of Gareth Jones from The Beer Essentials in Horsham’s East Street, who this year set out to create a truly national celebration of the country’s favourite brews in a town famous for its real ale credentials.
“I wanted beers from the top to the bottom of the UK,” says Gareth.
“They are coming from Scotland, Wales, Norfolk, and Cornwall. It’s a genuine opportunity to compare and contrast beers from throughout the country in one place.”
Among the line up will be Britain's most northerly brew, the Orkney Skull Splitter, and one of the most sought after – Sarah Hughes’ Ruby Mild, named after the brewer’s grandmother whose recipe for the 6% beer was discovered after her death.
The Festival is also hoping to give real ale fans the chance to sample this year’s new champion beer, Pale Rider, a 5.2% light ale from Kelham Island brewers, alongside Horsham's own Super Horse, brewed from Sussex hops and Sussex barley by Andy Hepworth at The Beer Station, and Old Harry, a 5.2% dark malty beer from Weltons.
The Horsham Beer Festival takes place on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 September at The Drill Hall, in Horsham’s Denne Road from 12noon - 4pm. Advance tickets only are available from The Beer Essentials, priced £4 for Saturday and £3 for Sunday, including entry and a Horsham Beer Festival glass.
More information about the beer festival is available by calling (01403) 218890.
The Horsham Beer Festival is part of the Horsham District Food & Drink Festival, which runs from 11 September to 3 October and is organised by Horsham District Council with financial support from Food from Britain, A taste of Sussex and West Sussex County Council to promote local producers and local produce outlets.
