Successfully reducing landfill waste

22nd September 2004

THANKS to residents’ efforts, over 10,000 tonnes of green garden waste and cardboard have been recycled into compost in the last 16 months.

The achievement has taken place as part of the Horsham District’s ACORN recycling and refuse scheme and is the equivalent weight of 7,400 family sized cars being diverted from landfill sites.

And this has the added benefit of reducing the amount of methane released into the atmosphere when this type of waste rots down under landfill conditions.

The reprocessing of the material takes place locally at Olus Environmental Ltd. in Wineham where an ongoing 16 week process turns raw garden waste and non-corrugated card into commercially available, Soil Association accredited compost.

Producing green waste compost also has the bonus of protecting peat bogs, which have traditionally been used to provide gardeners with a source of garden compost.

Commenting on the achievement, Cllr Robert Nye, Cabinet Member for Environmental Services and Public Health Control at Horsham District Council, said:

“This is tremendous news and exactly what we are aiming for.

"Every single item recycled continues to help make an overall difference but we will only succeed in the longer term if everyone keeps this up.

“I would like to thank everyone very much for their continued efforts in helping to reduce the amounts of waste going to landfill.”
