Record numbers at young dance nights

30th September 2004

A RECORD number of 480 under seventeen year olds came to last Friday’s SNAP (Say No and Phone) dance night in Horsham (24 September).

The dance nights take place every two months and are now pulling in at least 400 youngsters each time, with last Friday being the best ever turnout.

SNAP Dance Nights are organised as part of the local Crime and Disorder Strategy, and aim to give 13-17 year olds something to do whilst promoting the Crimestoppers telephone number and various health education messages.

A delighted Cllr Vivien Lyth, Cabinet Member for Community Partnerships and Housing Services at Horsham District Council, said:

“The SNAP Dance Nights have been run successfully for almost two years now and it seems that the District’s young just can’t get enough of them.

“The atmosphere is just great. It’s fun, safe and secure and above all, the youngsters have a great time.”

The next SNAP Dance Night is on Friday 26 November from 7.30pm-10.30pm in Horsham’s Drill Hall in Denne Road. The live music act is still to be confirmed.

At this event there will be prizes and giveaways and young people will also be able to have their mobile phones security marked free of charge.

All SNAP Dance Nights are alcohol, tobacco and drug free events and all those attending are searched on entry by professional security staff.

Tickets cost £4 in advance and £5 on the door and are available for 13-17 year olds only. Tickets are limited so early booking is advised. More information is available on (01403) 215288.

Adult volunteers are also needed for four hours every other month to help run the dance nights. Details from Shelley Denman on the same number.

The SNAP Dance Night initiative is organised by Horsham District Council in partnership with West Sussex Youth Service and Sussex Police.
