Solving the fly problem

6th October 2004

A SPEEDY approach has been taken to solving a recent problem with flies in the north Horsham area.

Since Friday 24 September, Horsham District Council's Environmental Health Officers have received 50 complaints about flies, mostly from an area north of Horsham town centre.

And as soon as reports started coming in, they started looking for any possible sources, including the landfill site in Langhurstwood Road near Horsham.

As a result, the site’s operators are continuing to take speedy and positive steps to resolve the problem, working closely with the District Council’s Environmental Health Officers and the Environment Agency which have offered free advice on the additional control measures that could be taken.

Commenting on the fly problem, Cllr Robert Nye, Cabinet Member for Environmental Services and Public Health Control at Horsham District Council, said:

“There have been reports in the national press that the number of flies worldwide will increase in years to come as global temperatures continue to rise.

“Having said that, it is pleasing that all parties are working together very positively to solve this problem as quickly as possible.”

The advice to the public from the Council's Public Health and Licensing Department is to continue to follow common sense:

  • Take extra care over disposal of household rubbish - ensure bin bags are sealed and lids to rubbish bins kept closed
  • Use proprietary fly spray to tackle flies indoors - always read the label
  • Flies can carry harmful bacteria so ensure stored food at home is covered to avoid flies landing on it
  • Report any fly tipped waste on the Council's 24 hour confidential hotline (01403) 215350.
  • Report any further complaints about flies to The Environment Agency on 0800 80 70 60 (24 hours).
