Free tips for an active and healthy later life

12th October 2004

A FREE event is taking place soon which promotes an active and healthy life for those aged 50 and over.

This year’s ‘Life is for Living’ event will take place on Wednesday 27 October in Horsham’s Drill Hall in Denne Road. It’s free to enter and runs from 10am to 4pm.

Visitors will be able to ‘have a go’ at opportunities which are themed around travel and leisure, healthy living and exercise, housing, safety and security, lifelong learning and community support.

There will also be areas for activities and free ‘try out’ sessions including yoga, Tai Chi, aromatherapy and massage, health walks, short mat bowls and chair based exercises.

Information about Horsham District Council's 'Community Link' alarm service will also be on show, which is celebrating 17 years service to the community this year.

Free sessions teaching people how to use the internet will also be on offer.

There is no need to book and the event is being billed as a 'real must' for all District residents who are 50 to 90 years of age (and beyond).

A similar Life is for Living event was held in Steyning on 8 October and attended by almost 200 people.

Speaking of the day, Trevor Beadle, Community Development Manager at Horsham District Council, said:

"The feedback from the Life is for Living day in Steyning is really positive and lots of people have said that they gained a great deal from coming along and from taking part in the activities on offer.

“It was also a real eye opener for many, who perhaps did not fully realise the number of opportunities and services available locally for older people.”

The Life is for Living events are organised by Horsham District Council, Horsham and Chanctonbury Primary Care Trust, Horsham District Age Concern and Horsham Area Council for Voluntary Service.

A telephone hotline has been set up to give information about the event, including details of support and transport to get to and from them. Call (01403) 215384 for more details.

Further information about opportunities for older people is available from Darrell Gale on (01403) 215533.
