Make sure you are eligible to vote

28th January 2005

VOTERS in the Horsham District are being encouraged to make sure that they will be eligible to vote at this year's forthcoming elections.

With the West Sussex County Council elections being held on Thursday 5 May, and a strong possibility that the General Election will be on the same day, now is the best time for anyone who isn’t registered to vote to ensure that they are on the electoral register.

Residents who are new to the District, or those who have not returned a voter registration form in the past two years, will need to register.  Entry onto the Electoral Register is a legal requirement and non-registration can carry a fine of up to £1,000.

If any resident thinks that he or she is not on the electoral register, they should contact the Elections Office at Horsham District Council on (01403) 215126.

Enquirers will then receive a simple form to fill in and return by Friday 11 March to ensure that they are eligible to vote at the 5 May elections.

Any voter can apply for a postal vote. Forms are available from the Elections Office at Horsham District Council and online

Postal vote applications can be received any time up to six days before the election, but residents are advised that they should not leave it this late to apply.

The Horsham District is divided into 11 county divisions, each one of which is represented by a councillor on the County Council. On 5 May there will be an election in every division and polling stations will be open from 8am to 9pm.  If the General Election is called on the same day, then the polling hours will be extended to run between 7am and 10pm.

More information is available from Horsham District Council’s Elections Office on (01403) 215126, email: elections@horsham.gov.uk
