Beware illegal competition tickets
2nd February 2006
THE public is being warned not to buy illegal competition tickets which have been on sale recently on the streets in parts of Horsham town centre.
The message comes from Horsham District Council, which is responsible for licensing activities, including street sellers.
Nigel Haverson, Head of Public Health and Licensing at the Council, explained:
“We would like to make the public aware that there have recently been some ticket sellers in the streets in Horsham town centre illegally selling competition tickets for £2 on behalf of a company.
“The illegal competition is for a holiday to the Canary Islands and street sellers have been known to have been operating recently in Horsham’s West Street, especially at lunch times.
“These particular sellers are not licensed and, as such, we cannot guarantee that any of the money collected is going to charitable purposes or that there is even a prize.
“We are currently in the process of prosecuting a similar company for the same offence.
“This situation is quite rare and we don’t want to put off anyone from being approached by people doing a genuine job.
”We recommend that you always ask to see the seller’s identification badge and authorisation letter from Horsham District Council.
“If you are in doubt, please call us for clarification.”
