Reducing crime in the community
10th February 2006
PARISH and neighbourhood councils are being invited to take part in community safety workshops in the Horsham District.
The idea behind the workshops, organised by the Horsham District Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership (HDCDRP) is to explore how local authorities, parish and neighbourhood councils can work closer together to reduce crime and increase public reassurance within communities.
The workshops will take place in three different areas:-
- Tuesday 28 February, Cowfold Village Hall
- Tuesday 7 March, Committee Room 1, Park North, Horsham
- Thursday 9 March, Pulborough Village Hall
Staff from Sussex Police and the Horsham District Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership will be at the event.
Subjects which will be discussed at the workshops will include learning about the work of the HDCDRP and how crime and anti-social behaviour levels are being reduced across the District, finding the most effective ways of getting communities concerns across to the Police and partner agencies, assisting in setting targets for 2006 within the framework of the three year Community Safety Strategy.
There will also be a chance to ask specific questions about concerns affecting communities.
The Government’s review of the Crime and Disorder Act and the National Community Safety plan 2006-2009 have stressed that crime and disorder reduction partnerships should be more visible to the communities they serve and more answerable to them.
The review also recommends that local councillors should act as a channel at neighbourhood level for relaying local concerns to community safety partners and encouraging local people to get involved in local governance.
It is hoped these workshops will build on the already good working relationships with local communities and the HDCDRP and improve communications for the future.
