Festive French market in Horsham

29th November 2006

THE ever popular visiting French market, France at Home, makes a seasonal return to Horsham’s Carfax on Thursday 7 and Friday 8 December with lots of Christmas surprises.

Its appearance from 9am to 9pm on December 7 gives an added boost to the many attractions planned for that Thursday’s late night shopping event in Horsham.

As successfully trialled in this summer’s ‘French Fest’, there will also be lots of French themed entertainment over the two days to give the market an authentic atmosphere, including accordion music on the Thursday and ‘Fascinatin' Rhythm’ a jazz band in the style of ‘hot Club de Paris’ on the Friday lunchtime.

A pavement caricaturist, Mike Hatchard, will be drawing free cartoons, Montmartre style, for visitors on the Thursday afternoon.

As in summer, local schools and Horsham’s Town Twinning Association are encouraging visitors to practice some French language with the traders and special ‘Je parle Francais’ stickers will be handed out to those who try their linguistic skills.

Seasonal additions to the usual range of Normandy foodstuffs and goods from all over France will be available, include cheeses which are made only in the winter season such as ‘Vacherin’, a creamy cheese from the Alps, and an expanded range of biscuits from Brittany.

There will also be a fantastic selection of sweets for Christmas which will include Turkish delights and indulgent pralines.

Customers are reminded that they can of course freeze any of their cheese purchases if they need to keep until Christmas.

Town Centres Manager for Horsham District Council, Garry Mortimer-Cook, said:

“This summer’s FrenchFest was a great success when thousands enjoyed the relaxed continental atmosphere in Horsham’s Carfax.

“I hope as many people as possible will take the opportunity to come into Horsham over the two days to experience what promises to be a magical combination of Christmas lights, French fare and our sparkling shop displays.

“For those looking for quality gifts with a difference, Horsham’s huge range of specialist independent shops offer a choice unmatched for many a mile.”

Cllr John Cox, Cabinet Member for Economic Development and IT at Horsham District Council, said:

“We would like to say ‘bienvenue à Horsham’ to everyone who comes along to our Carfax Christmas French Market, we hope you thoroughly enjoy yourselves.”
