The importance of child's play

6th December 2006

WORK is underway to further improve play opportunities for children and young people in the Horsham District.

Horsham District Council is currently developing a Play Strategy which will look at improving children’s and young people’s play opportunities throughout the District.

Cllr Alan Harris, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Cultural Services at Horsham District Council, said:

“We all recognise that the ability to play is essential for children’s healthy development and wellbeing.

“As children grow up, meeting with friends or going to the local park under their own steam plays an important part in developing their confidence.

“Being able to have fun in public spaces is one of the hallmarks of a vibrant community and we aim to develop a strategy which, in accordance with national guidance, will focus on how opportunities for play and informal recreation can be enhanced.”

In consultation with its partners, the Council is going to develop the Play Strategy and in so doing this allows access to a Big Lottery Fund grant of £213,000 that will go towards helping achieving these objectives.

If anyone wants to discuss their ideas or issues around children’s play, they can do so by contacting Simeon Packard of Urban Play Solutions who is assisting with the project. His contact details are as follows:
