Eat healthily, live longer

20th December 2006

A NUTRITION project organised for older people in Horsham is proving beneficial.

The project, which is a partnership between Horsham District Council, Age Concern, Saxon Weald and social care agencies, has come about from actions contained in the Horsham District Council Community Strategy.

Nutrition seminars have taken place at various residential homes in Horsham, including Gerald Court, Osmund Court, Leggyfield Court, Dingemans Day Centre, Bridges Court and Hordern House.

Speaking this week, Rob Dickin, Community Health Development Officer for Horsham District Council and West Sussex Primary Care Trust, who has helped to organise the venture, said:

“The aim is to provide older people with a better understanding of what makes a balanced diet and how to interpret food labels.

“A nutritionist was appointed to put together a 14 day menu for healthy, balanced meals that can be prepared on a budget.

“The menu plans and recipes have been put together into a pack which is given to those participating in the sessions.”

In total, six volunteers from the Horsham District Senior Persons’ Council have been trained to deliver the sessions.

Sessions have been run in a number of different retirement homes that are managed by Saxon Weald.

Feedback has been very positive with comments including ‘I have learnt a lot about reading food labels’, ‘I have learnt a balanced diet means a healthy life’, ‘excellent and informative’.

It is anticipated further sessions will be run in other retirement homes and day centres in the New Year.
