Beer mats show serious message
22nd December 2006
BEER MATS are delivering an important message to drinkers over the festive and New Year period.
Beer mats with a holographic picture which depicts a group of people at a table when held in one way, and the same group of people in a car accident when held another, are being dispersed amongst pubs in Horsham that are members of Pub Watch.
The mats have the slogan ‘drink and drive, drink and die’.
Pub Watch is an initiative set up by the Horsham District Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership (HDCDRP) with a large membership of pubs in Horsham.
The idea is to bring unity to the pubs in the town, as well as providing a useful resource for the pub owners to exchange information.
Pub Watch’s aims include ensuring that staff and customers are safe; preventing illegal behaviour and getting across safe drinking messages.
The beer mats are the brainchild of a fire officer who works in Surrey, who designed them following on from a car crash involving one of his friends.
Paul Daly, Horsham District Commander at Horsham Fire Station, said:
“I fully support joint initiatives like this which we hope will reduce the amount of casualties on the roads.
“We want people to have a happy, safe festive period and just remember to be careful. These posters carry a hard hitting message, but hopefully its one people will remember.”
Greg Charman, Community Safety Officer for the Horsham District Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership, said:
“We’re pleased to have the opportunity to work in partnership with West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, particularly around this seasonal period when the cases of drink related driving incidents increases dramatically.
“Anything that can be done to raise awareness of the dangers of drink driving is a good idea and we’re pleased on behalf of Pub Watch to put the mats into Horsham’s pubs.”
