Skate Park users invited to have their say

31st January 2007

USERS of Horsham Skate Park are being invited to have their say on how the facility is run and improved.

Since the Skate Park’s opening in 2001, the much used area found in Horsham Park has become one of the most popular activity venues in the Horsham District attracting up to 150 users a day in the summer.

Such intense usage needs a dedicated maintenance programme and the site is monitored by both site user representatives and the Council. There are few better examples of young people working with the Council to develop the facilities that they want but also helping to look after them.

Last year’s fundraising efforts by the users, the Horsham Streetsports Association and a hugely successful ‘Skate Jam’ organised by local business Little Sky, enabled the Skate Park to be further modified through layout changes that increased capacity and created new challenges for users.

Although predominantly used by teenagers and young adults, site spectators will come across participants from the ages of five to 50!

Horsham Skate Park has a small beginners area but is challenging enough to allow users such as Peter Short to hone their skills to national competition level. Last year Peter, a local skater, was so successful he was invited to represent his country in national competition in America.

Although the relationship with users is mainly via the site representatives, each year the Council seeks to meet as many users as possible to give them updates about site improvements and other issues.

This year the open meeting will be held on Tuesday 6 February at 7.15pm in Horsham Park Barn.

Everyone is invited to come along and have their say about current skate park issues or join the planning committee for the June 2007 Skate Jam in Horsham Park, which attracts over a thousand spectators.
