Local Thai cooking gets seal of approval

29th March 2007

A COURSE held specifically for Thai restaurant staff working in the local area has been a great success for all of its students.

In total, 17 staff from various Thai restaurants in the Horsham, Crawley and Mid Sussex area took the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) foundation certificate in food hygiene course.

All the students passed and have received a certificate from the CIEH.

The course was staged with translations into Thai and was organised by Horsham District Council's Public Health department. The course was run in partnership with Crawley Borough Council and Worthing Borough Council.

Course director and Principal Environmental Health Officer for Horsham District Council, Ray Grant, said:

“It has been really good to see the enthusiastic response of the local Thai community engaged in food businesses getting their staff properly trained to help meet the requirements of food hygiene legislation.”

The department holds about six courses per year in English but also arranges courses in other languages such as Cantonese and Bengali where the food handler’s first language may not be English.

Nigel Haverson, Head of Public Health and Licensing at Horsham District Council, said:

“It is important to encourage everyone involved in the food catering services industry reaches and excels in meeting food safety standards.

“By gaining this certificate, not only do the students feel a sense of pride, but employers will benefit from having staff properly trained in food hygiene, which in turn will increase customer confidence in their business.

“From our point of view, it is very satisfying to offer equal training opportunities for all food handlers.”

Subjects covered on the course include food poisoning and how to prevent it, personal hygiene, cleaning and disinfection and effective temperature control of food.

Details of upcoming courses in English, Thai, Bengali and Cantonese is available by contacting Horsham District Council on 01403 215427, email: publichealth.licensing@horsham.gov.uk
