Skateboarder to be remembered at 2007 Skate Jam launch
1st May 2007
A COMMEMORATIVE plaque honouring local skateboarder John Wells will be unveiled at Horsham Skate Park this Saturday 5 May as local enthusiasts gather to launch the Horsham Skate Jam 2007.
Chairman of the HSSA (Horsham Street Sports Association) Martin Robertson described John, who died in 2004 at the age of 22, as committed skateboarder who would be remembered for all the help and support he gave to the Association in order to establish Horsham’s skate park.
“John was there from day one at all of the meetings and was someone you could rely on when there was something needed to be done,” said Martin.
The unveiling, scheduled for midday on 5 May at the skate park in Horsham Park, will be dovetailed by displays from some of the skate park's most talented users, including both skaters and BMXers and marks the first opportunity for enthusiasts to enter the 2007 Skate Jam.
The Jam will take place on Sunday 1 July as part of Horsham District Council's 'Parkfest' and is sponsored and co-managed by local kids clothing retailer, Little Sky.
Colin Minto of Little Sky said: “The Jam grows in size and popularity each year and showcases the talent, skills and dedication of Horsham’s youth.
“Entrants, photographers and organisational support staff of all ages come together to make the event a regular success.
“Horsham’s street sports community is very close and we think it’s a wonderful and indicative gesture from the Skate Park users to install a permanent reminder of one of their friends.”
Potential participants to the Skate Jam can obtain entrance forms from Little Sky in West Street, Horsham. For general enquiries, contact Nigel Fitzsimmons at Horsham District Council on 01403 215279, email: nigel.fitzsimmons@horsham.gov.uk
