Composting Awareness Week 6-12 May 2007
9th May 2007
THE seventh annual Composting Awareness Week is being celebrated in Horsham’s Carfax this week (on 8 and 10 May) with displays and information letting people know about the benefits of home composting.
Clare Bowen-Jones, Waste Awareness and Education Officer at Horsham District Council, explained what was going on:
“Over one third of the contents of an average UK household dustbin can be home composted, not to mention all the garden waste that can be added to a compost bin.
“Many people still think composting their own waste at home is difficult but all you need to do is get a 50:50 mix of greens and browns –
“BROWNS (carbon): Dry, hard materials e.g. dried leaves, prunings, woody type material, egg shells, small amounts of paper and card (egg boxes and toilet/kitchen rolls).
“GREENS (nitrogen): Soft, wet materials e.g. grass cuttings, flowers, kitchen waste (peelings, fruit and vegetable leftovers), tea bags, coffee grinds.
“Within a year your materials will be made into rich compost that you can use.
“Not only are you producing a useful product you are also reducing the amount of waste that is being sent to our landfill sites and reducing the amount of carbon dioxide and methane gas that is being released into our atmosphere and causing global warming.”
For a compost bin telephone 0845 077 0757 or go online to: www.recyclenow.com/compost (quote the reference HCA1).
Clare was also promoting a compost voucher for outlets selling Olus’s “Easi-Grow” peat-free compost which has been produced from residents’ green garden waste with non-corrugated card.
“We want to say a big thank you to all the residents for using the green garden waste scheme as it is helped to divert just over 12,000 tonnes of green garden waste with non-corrugated card from our landfill sites. We are offering four bags of compost for the price of three,” she said.
For details about which outlets are selling the compost and how to get hold of the vouchers please call Clare on 01403 215591.
