Scenes of Street Life - New Exhibition at Horsham Museum
15th May 2007
We take streets for granted; we walk along them, live in them and occasionally shop in them. But what we rarely do is think about them, their past, their present or even their future. But streets give a town its character and culture. Now, thanks to the work of the late Sylvia Barlow, her son in law and Horsham Museum, this has been brilliantly resolved in a new temporary exhibition and book.
Fortunately for over 100 years Horsham Museum has been acquiring photographs of the town’s streets, these provide a fascinating snapshot on to the past. But photographs of Horsham have only been around since 1850; what about street life before then? Thanks to the research undertaken by Sylvia, her friends and colleagues, Horsham before photography is also explored through the written word enabling the visitor to explore the early history and learn of anecdotes and events relating to their street.
Not all streets are old though, some have very modern origins. The exhibition uses original photographs by Sylvia’s son-in-law portraying modern Horsham.
The exhibition ‘Streets of Horsham’ uses 30 images of the town to tell the fascinating story of the town. From well known streets such as the Causeway to minor passages such as Stan’s Way the exhibition reveals the many changes to Horsham’s streets over the years as old buildings give way to new developments.
‘Streets of Horsham’ opens at 4pm on Friday 18th May in the Hurst Room and runs until 10th July.
