Chance to stand up for standards

PEOPLE who want to help ensure the highest possible standards of conduct in local government are being asked to come forward.

Horsham District Council wants to appoint an additional independent person to serve on its Standards Committee, which also includes district and parish council representatives.

The Council is required to appoint a Standards Committee to secure high standards of probity amongst councillors of both the Council and the 32 parish councils in its area. In doing this, it is acting under the Local Government Act 2000.

The term of appointment is four years and the appointment will be made by the full Council.

The functions of Horsham District Council’s Standards Committee include education about councillors’ conduct, raising awareness and promoting high standards of conduct for councillors, and sitting on disciplinary tribunals.

In the near future legislation will be come into being to enable Standards Committees to receive complaints, to investigate and determine them.

To be eligible for this position, applicants must be aged over 18 as well as fulfil a range of other criteria. Full information is available on request.

The initial commitment will involve at least one meeting per quarter together with preparation time, for which an allowance will be payable. Meetings are normally held in the daytime and may be called at short notice.

The closing date for applications is 10 June 2007 and it is anticipated that the appointment will be made by the end of June.
