New glass collection banks in Southwater

8th June 2007

TWO new underground glass collection banks have been put into the recently redeveloped village centre in Southwater.

Fly tipping and litter was becoming a problem around the existing glass banks at the location, as was the noise caused by glass being dropped into them in a relatively contained space.

Added to this, different containers were needed to collect the variety of glass being recycled.

Now, in keeping with the new Lintot Square development, two modern underground glass banks have been installed by Horsham District Council to take glass and jars of any colour. The new banks also blend in more with the surroundings of Lintot Square.

The new facility, being mostly underground and self contained, has a large glass collection chamber underground which also has the benefit of reducing the noise generated by smashing glass as well as discouraging rubbish being dumped around it on the surface.

The banks can be found near the central car park in Southwater’s Lintot Square.

The collection of the glass should also be more efficient, as the new banks can be accommodated by the same vehicles that collect from over ground glass collection banks.

The underground banks are widely used across Europe and are relatively new in this area. It is hoped that, if they are a success, they might be rolled out across the Horsham District to other areas where there are problems with litter and noise pollution.
