New ‘Revolution’ scheme turns teens around

20th June 2007

HORSHAM District’s Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership has recently celebrated the completion of its first ‘Revolution’ programme.

Revolution is a four week course aimed at young people aged from 13 to 18.

Potential candidates for the course are referred via the Horsham District’s Anti-Social Behaviour Unit based on intelligence linked to previous patterns of behaviour.

The main appeal to young people taking part in the course is the opportunity to try new activities such as abseiling, orienteering and archery which teach them positive skills such as effective communication, self esteem and team work.

Revolution also includes a ‘back to basics’ overnight camp designed to help participants discover that there is more to life than mobile ‘phones and modern day gadgets.

The programme has been put together in conjunction with Outdoor Adventure Therapy, which has huge experience in working with teenagers who might find practical activities a more effective learning tool than a traditional classroom setting.

Drew Shaw-Dickinson of Outdoor Adventure Therapy said:

“I am really pleased to be involved in this project with the Horsham District and feel very strongly that this kind of work is a move in the right direction.”

In addition to the activities and camping, professionals from a variety of agencies such as West Sussex Connexions, the Drug and Alcohol Action Team and Youth Offending Team are available to all participants during the course.

Greg Charman, Community Safety Officer for the Horsham District Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership, said:

“Everyone involved was very encouraged.

”We learnt a lot for future courses and all of the attendees found the experience hugely rewarding and enjoyable.

“We are planning the next course in the series already and hope to put many more groups through the experience.”

He added:

“We’re currently looking at follow up work which may include mentoring.

”The Anti-Social Behaviour Unit is tracking all of the participants involved to ensure their behaviour continues to improve and it is intended that some statistical analysis will be conducted to demonstrate that this kind of course is a hugely positive step forward.”
