Scores to show food hygiene standards

21st June 2007

THE PUBLIC might soon be able see a score for the level of food hygiene at all places to eat and food businesses in the Horsham District.

Work is now underway to see if such a scheme could work.

Horsham District Council’s Cabinet meeting of 14 June agreed to look further into the initiative, which, if agreed, would mean that all 893 food businesses and eating establishments in the District would have their food hygiene inspection scores published on the Council’s website.

Speaking after the meeting, Cllr Brian Donnelly, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Health at Horsham District Council, said:

“There is evidence from abroad that shows that publicity about food hygiene scores can lead to improvement in hygiene levels.

“Overall, the standard of food hygiene is very good at eating establishments in the Horsham District but there is always a need to maintain a consistent high standard and improve upon this.

“The Council is responsible for ensuring food safety and this initiative, if agreed, could help further ensure that the public’s health is protected as well as improve public information about such matters.”

The Cabinet agreed at the meeting that consultation on such a scheme will now take place with local food businesses, District Councillors and local parish and neighbourhood councils.

A further report with the results of the consultation exercise is expected at the Cabinet meeting in November.
