Taking a closer look at issues of public interest
13th July 2007
SUGGESTIONS for issues of public interest to be looked at in detail are being asked for by the Scrutiny & Overview Committee at Horsham District Council.
This Council committee assists in the strategic development of Council policy and scrutinises the Council's decision making processes.
It can also review issues of local concern, monitor and review the delivery of services as well as scrutinise the activities of certain outside bodies. The committee can also call in the Council’s Cabinet decisions for review.
Periodically the committee’s work programme is renewed. Members and staff at the Council, community groups, parish and neighbourhood councils and the public are asked for their views on what should be included.
Examples of previous subjects looked at in detail include affordable housing, car parking policy and area committees.
Similar committees in other councils have examined subjects such as crime reduction, fly tipping, anti-social behaviour, and homelessness.
All of the committees make recommendations to further improve the areas they have investigated.
Speaking this week, Cllr David Sheldon, Chairman of the Scrutiny & Overview Committee at Horsham District Council, said:
“Say the word ‘committee’ and this turns off many people straight away.
“But if you look behind this you will see that the subjects we discuss and take action upon are often of real interest to local people.
“Now is everyone’s chance to say what they would like us to look at in more detail in the hope that the committee’s efforts can help make things better.
“Do please let us have your suggestions.”
