New kerbside mixed dry recycling scheme is proposed

1st August 2007

IN EFFORTS to increase recycling in the Horsham District up to almost 50% of all household waste, a new kerbside mixed dry recycling scheme is being proposed.

Currently Horsham District residents are recycling an impressive 38% of their household waste but the figure needs to continue to improve so waste is diverted from landfill sites.

Horsham District Council’s Cabinet meeting held on 26 July has recommended that a new kerbside mixed dry recycling scheme should be introduced for householders across the Horsham District starting in February 2009.

If the proposal gains approval by a meeting of the full Council on 5 September, householders will be asked, from February 2009, to put all their recycling in a new 240 litre bin (the same size as the existing brown lidded bin). Other containers such as baskets, 140 litre or 360 litre wheeled bins may be provided but only in special circumstances.

This would mean that the new collection bin would take all mixed dry recyclables – newspapers, magazines, cans, aerosols, plastic bottles, card, corrugated cardboard, office and other mixed paper; junk mail including envelopes, waxed food cartons (e.g. Tetra Pak® ) mixed coloured glass bottles and jars.

As part of the county-wide Reclaim contract, Viridor Waste Management has started work building a brand new and state of the art Materials Recycling Facility which will be increasing the range of recycling materials that can be taken. Viridor is working in partnership with West Sussex County Council and all seven district and borough councils.

Assuming the proposed kerbside mixed dry recycling scheme goes ahead in the Horsham District, further information, advice and help will be provided to all residents nearer the time.

Speaking after the recent Cabinet meeting, Cllr Robert Nye, Cabinet Member for Environment and Sustainability at Horsham District Council, said:

“We are continually looking for new ways to further increase household recycling and the proposed new single collection bin for all dry mixed recyclable materials is a simple but potentially effective solution.

“I am particularly pleased that we will be able to collect a wider range of materials including paper and junk mail, all types of cardboard, waxed food cartons (e.g. Tetra Pak®) and glass.

“This is a significant improvement which, together with not having to separate so many waste materials, will make recycling much easier for everyone.

“In the meantime and until a decision is made as to whether the scheme can be introduced I would like to once again thank all residents for their continued and effective support in recycling.”
